Australian Festivals of 2016
Beginning with the Werribee Mansion lawn in Melbourne on New Year’s Day, to an Easter weekend in beautiful Byron Bay for the annual Bluesfest music festival- we’ve got you covered. There are events to suit every taste across Australia, but here are five of our favourites.
1. For survivors of New Year’s Eve, Let Them Eat Cake offers an electronic garden party like no other in the sublime surroundings of Melbourne’s Werribee 60 room Italianate Mansion. An annual New Year’s Day sell-out, the unrivalled underground festival offers not just electronic artists and DJ’s, but a unique environment for all attendees. Slick, stylish and undeniably sexy, this party is a smorgasbord of food, art and music. Described as ‘a whirlwind day of extravagance in its purest form’ according to Beat Magazine, the event has an environmental, sustainable heart with a solar-powered sound system and full recycling done onsite.
2. With the best in food, wine, music and culture set to return to the Mornington Peninsula on Sunday, March 20th, the Peninsula Picnic showcases a gourmet selection of perfect picnic options from resident chefs and bespoke stalls – all just 45 minutes from Melbourne. The stunning location was recently named in National Geographic’s annual Best Trips of the World 2015 List – need we say more?
3. For a weekend of mid-year camping, in July 2016 – Splendour in the Grass offers global A-List artists and acts with a range of comedians, buskers, other performers plus creative attractions across the iconic tourist destination – Byron Shire. Bring a big smile, an open mind and join 30,000 punters at this sprawling Aussie institution that’s been awarded a place inside the top 20 best music festivals in the world.
4. In Sydney, the nation’s largest city offers up the eighth annual Blues and Roots Festival from 27-30th October. Almost all of the event is free and intriguingly includes a “tent city” situated in Deerubun Park – a mere minutes’ walk from the main stages. Patrons can also pay for the Blues Cruise paddle steamer which takes them to the adjacent Hawkesbury River. Where else in the world could you camp and take a riverboat trip within such a sizeable city as Sydney?
5. Last, but not least, with more than 100,000 in attendance, the family friendly Byron Bay Bluesfest boasts the title of the foremost destination festival in Australia. Held during Easter weekend on 120 hectares at Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, the event presents more than 200 performances across 7 stages, over 5, 12 hour days and camping for up to 6,000 people. Offering the biggest international names in music, in addition to food and market stalls, undercover food courts, beer gardens, and children’s entertainment…how could you miss it?
So prepare your passport and rearrange your holiday calendar. Australia’s annual festival season has only just begun.
